from paper to precision: how mondriaan benefits from a digital laboratory orderng process

Mondriaan has been using Lab24 for digital laboratory ordering since 2017. A great opportunity to look back: what challenges did they face before implementing Lab24, and how has their experience evolved over the years?

the bigger picture

Mondriaan provides mental healthcare, prevention services, addiction care and forensic psychiatry across South Limburg. Each year, more than 13,000 people are supported by 2,400 healthcare professionals and 150 volunteers. Their in-house medical service consists of GPs, nurses, a phlebotomy service and more than 25 sample collection locations. On average, over 20,000 laboratory orders are processed every year.

These are significant volumes, making a smooth and reliable flow of information essential for achieving the best possible outcomes.
 

a paper-based challenge...

Before the implementation of Lab24, Mondriaan's laboratory ordering process was entirely paper-based – a situation that is still common within many mental healthcare organisations today. As a result, there was less control over the overall process and information moved slowly through the organisation. Recurring orders, which are now managed through protocols within Lab24, were tracked manually in a paper diary.

It was time for a change! In 2017, Mondriaan partnered with MUMC+ to introduce digital laboratory ordering through Lab24.

the experience

Today, the entire process surrounding laboratory ordering and results management has been paperless for many years. Mondriaan works with multiple laboratories, and all information flows are brought together seamlessly within Lab24.

Tom Jegerings, Healthcare & ICT Connector at Mondriaan, is enthusiastic: “By configuring predefined order sets within Lab24, we have achieved greater standardisation and are able to reduce costs associated with requested tests. Thanks to Lab24's 'digital runway', which combines HL7 and EDIFACT, information is available much faster. The worklists for orders, results and protocols provide a clear and structured overview.”

Tom considers the protocol functionality to be particularly unique: “Once configured, Lab24 removes a significant amount of error-prone manual work. Orders are automatically created for all stages of a protocol, and healthcare professionals are kept informed through notifications throughout the process.”
